| Bart van Lier plays the trombones of the “Bart van Lier”-edition developed in close cooperation with him. |
| Bart van Lier from the Netherlands is world-famous as jazz trombone player. One reason of his publicity are the jazz-departments of the Conservatories Den Haag and Hilversum, which he co-founded and taught afterwards. Other reasons are the countless radio and tv gigs he has created since the sixties, many recordings and the great orchestras and artists he worked together with: | ||
For example, since 1977 he is trombone player in the Big Band of Peter Herbolzheimer and played with Stan Getz, Charlie Mariano, Dave Friedman, Udo Lindenberg and arranged tours with Diane Reeves and Chaka Khan. In 1992, he became first trombone player and soloist at the Metropole Orchestra, Radio Hilversum and made concerts and recordings with stars like Vince Mendoza, Herbie Hancock and Randy Brecker. Tours, workshops and master classes took him around the world. Bart van Lier also developed his own training method and published this in a book in different countries.

| Matthias Haslach Instrument: Bb-trumpet “Spirit S1“ |
Matthias Haslach was young student with Wolfgang Guggenberger at the Richard-Strauss-conservatorium in Munich. In 2001, he passed his degree at the conservatorium in Munich with distinction. From 2001 to 2003, he was solo trumpet player at the theatre of Aachen. Since January 2008, he is deputy solo trumpet player at the philharmonic orchestra in Stuttgart. Additional, he orchestrates as a soloist and as a member of different ensembles (e.g. Berthold Schick and his Allgäu 6; swabian brass ensemble; BlechArt – the brass ensemble of the philharmonic orchestra in Stuttgart).
| Matthias Haslach about the Bb-trumpet ”Spirit S1“: “I am enthusiastic of the Spirit S1, because this instrument has a great intonation, an easy response and a beautiful, dark sound. Due to the easy playability, it is especially in the daily routine of an orchestra player a good alternative to other trumpet models.” | ||
| György Gyivicsan trombonist in the “Slokar Quartet” and professor at the Conservatory in Szeged, Hungary Instrument: Bb/F-tenor trombone “Slokar performance” |
György Gyivicsan about his trombone: “I trust in the perfect response and intonation of my “Slokar performance” for years. This trombone has all characteristics I expect of a premium instrument. The mutability of this trombone and its unique sound inspire me anew each day.”
| Martin van den Berg bass trombone player at Metropole Orchestra Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra Dutch Jazz Orchestra Instrument: Bb/F/Gb/D-bass trombone ”Orchestra signature” Martin van den Berg: “Since 8 years I play the K&H bass trombone with great satisfaction. Playing it in my orchestra gives me a great deal of freedom to blend with all kinds of music styles. The Metropole Orchestra’s repertoire varies from pop to jazz to classical/film music. Playing it in the freelance era it provides me also maximum sound quality, flexibility, and punch in the lower register as well in salsa big bands as in classical orchestra’s. For even better sound quality in the middle and higher register I use the offset system, where the airflow only passes one valve. It is truly the best all-round bass trombone out there! The new bass trombone “Orchestra signature” with the “open flow”-valves is a refined bass trombone which deserves the title "allround" even more than before! |
I have never played a bass trombone which combines this level of excellent tone quality, flexibility through all registers and clear attack on every note. With the exchangeable bell section the extremes in music styles are even better to handle; a warm, open sound with the 10,2” bell for symphony orchestras and a compact, clear sound with the 9,5” bell for jazz orchestras!"
| Ilja Reijngoud trombone player, composer, arranger, leader of the Big Band Instrument: Bb-tenor trombone Bart van Lier ".480/88” Ilja Reijngoud about his trombone: "Convincing characteristics: fantastic full sound – simply to play in the high and low registers - warm tone with lots of harmonics – great intonation – mobile flexibility – easy fast sound attack – flexible instrument – good for lead-trombone – section-play and solo - also perfect for classical and modern music.” |
Since 1998, Ilja Reijngoud has been teaching the trombone class at the Rotterdam Conservatory (with his previous teacher Bart van Lier) and at the Arnheim Conservatory. He directed workshops in Europe and America (Los Angeles, New Orleans, Amsterdam, The Hague, Liechtenstein/Vaduz) and published some of his compositions and arrangements (Warwick Music England). Ilja is a member in the Dutch Jazz Orchestra, Nueva Manteca, in the Cubop City Big Band and in many other famous Dutch bands. For his CD “The Shakespeare Album” (2009), he got the Edison Award 2009.

The Kühnl & Hoyer trombones have given me my voice. With their rich sound and large variety of colours they have become irreplaceable. From the most exquisite smooth legato to the present and upfront attack – from the quietest entrances and melodies to the loudest climaxes - from the darkest pedal notes to the really focused high notes.
| These instruments really offer me what I need to express myself.
The “Bolero” tenor trombone is my main instrument in the orchestra. I enjoy it particularly because of its naturally dark and solid sound which can be brightened up whenever more presence is needed. These qualities combined with its sublime flexibility make it also my first choice for classic solo work and chamber music. My “Signature Bass” trombone configured with a “Symphonic” slide, an “Open Flow” valve section and a 25cm “Orchestra” bell is an absolute joy to play, with its thick sound and responsiveness it serves me perfectly in the orchestra and in the commercial world. I even use it for jazz solos. What makes it so unique is the facts that while it is second to none in its low range, at the same time it is extremely colourful in the mid high range while staying true to its warm bass trombone sound. |
| My “Orchestra Alto” trombone with its Bb valve feels like an
extremely agile modern instrument while offering me the classing German
orchestra sound at the same time. It blends equally as well with a modern
trombone section as it does with the alto voices in the choir. My “Bart van Lier 480/488” is a special small bore trombone for me because I can cut though the loudest big band or Latin group while it can be played extremely sweetly in a ballad thought a microphone. Really two trombones for one! I play all my Kühnl & Hoyer trombones completely in yellow brass with the exception of the light weight “Bart van Lier” slide. The Kühnl & Hoyer team have been wonderful in helping me to tweak my instruments to the way I love them. |

Hansjörg Profanter: "For many years I’ve been playing the alto trombone of the “Slokar“-edition. I’m extremely satisfied with this instrument. It provides me a safe response, a smooth sound and a perfect hand-crafted workmanship. Moreover, I’m very interested in the further development of the tenor trombone. Currently I’m testing the Bb/F-tenor trombone “Bolero” with the new “open flow”-valve.”

| Lars Arens docent for Jazz trombone at the universities of Lisbon and Porto first trombone player of the “European Movement Jazz Orchestra”, composer, arranger Instruments: Bb-tenor trombone Bart van Lier ".480/88“ Bb-tenor trombone Bart van Lier ".512“ Lars Arens about his trombones: “I bought my first BvL 480/88 in 1996, when I still was studying with Bart. Concerning to the response, this first instrument feels a little bit more stolid. The next generation (bought in 2005) 480/88 is simply perfect: This trombone almost plays automatically! Accuracy in the response, brilliance in each register, especially in the low register - very often this is not the case with small jazz trombones. Due to the necessity of a bigger and darker sound, especially in the brass section in projects of African music, I broadened my range |
with a BvL 512. This trombone also matches my expectations perfectly! Even colleagues, who are not brass players, notice the brilliance of these instruments! Kühnl & Hoyer trombones are first class instruments, which I appreciate as well as because of their sound and also because of their high-quality material and manufacture.”

Karl Reissig about the Bb-trumpet “Spirit” S 1 silver plated: “This instrument convinces me through his enormous charisma and his precise intonation. The trumpet plays very directly. It evolves enormous power and vividness. The undertones are played easily too. It is fun playing this instrument. I can perform with the trumpet and this instrument mirrors my images. This trumpet leaves nothing to be desired. It doesn’t talk about workmanship and design of Kühnl & Hoyer – it is absolute top class! Everybody recommends such an instrument to his best friend!”
