Nils Wogram

Nils Wogram is considered one of the most important European jazz musicians. He performs at numerous festivals and tours worldwide with his bands and as a soloist. Nils Wogram gained recognition primarily for his virtuosic trombone style, his original compositions, and the distinctive sound of his long-standing bands.

In 2010, Nils Wogram founded his own label, nwog-records, on which he releases his albums. Nils Wogram’s bands exclusively perform original compositions. He also regularly receives commissioned compositions from other ensembles.

A short biography Nils Wogram (born in 1972 in Braunschweig) began playing the trombone at the age of 15. During that time, he received both classical and jazz education. At the age of 16, he became a member of the Bundesjugendjazzorchester (German Youth Jazz Orchestra), started his own bands, and won prizes at Jugend musiziert (German music competition for young musicians). From 1992 to 1994, he studied in New York and completed his education in 1999 at the Musikhochschule Köln (Cologne University of Music). Since then, Nils Wogram has released 35 albums under his own name. He now runs his own label called nwog records. Nils Wogram lives in Männedorf, in the canton of Zurich, and teaches at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts.

Nils Wogram’s musical philosophy:
Nils Wogram’s music is deeply rooted in the tradition of jazz. However, he strives to expand this language by incorporating musical materials that do not originate from jazz. These include different forms of rhythm, structure, as well as melodic and harmonic elements. Nils Wogram is a fan of “real bands” with their own ensemble sound. Most of his formations have been together for many years (e.g., Root 70 since 2000 and Nostalgia since 2004). Nils Wogram believes that the best music is played by real bands/ensembles.
